The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the UK have expressed concern about the need to assess the competence of staff coming from other countries inside the EU to Britain to work. Currently only workers from outside the EU are checked to see that they have the same standards as UK staff.

Competence in health and safety

Employers must ensure that any individual performing a task has the competence to do so without putting the health and safety of themselves or others at significant risk.

The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) describe competence as “the combination of training, skills, experience and knowledge that a person has and their ability to apply them to perform a task safely. Other factors, such as attitude and physical ability, can also affect someone’s competence.”

A cable was supposed to catch and slow down the E-2C Hawkeye as it landed on the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D Eisenhower in Norfolk, Virginia.
